I've been working on a diorama series called Promised Land, made from original Victorian images and text.
I wanted to highlight the prevalence of sexual harassment against women and show how it's been going on for hundreds of years.
I've juxtaposed modern language in cartoon speak bubbles with the old images to further highlight the passage of time.
I used badly damaged copies of the Illustrated London News from the 1800s to create the images. I never use undamaged books that could conceivably be enjoyed by someone in my work, as I love books too much. They have to have pages missing before I'll consider them. These particular copies were about to be thrown on a bonfire, and I rescued them all to give them a new life in art.
The dioramas are framed in boxes made from the hardbacks of these damaged bonfire books.
